Post-Op Instructions
Your doctor will provide specific postoperative instructions based on your type of surgery. Below are some general guidelines to follow after surgery:
-
Medications: Take pain-relieving and other medications as advised. Pain-relieving medication should be taken with food. After the first 48 hours, take pain medication only when necessary.
-
Avoid Alcohol and Heavy Activities: Do not drink alcohol, drive a vehicle, operate machinery, or sign any legal documents for the first 24 hours, as the effects of sedatives and/or anesthesia may still be present.
-
Swelling Management: Use ice packs to control swelling. Ensure that the ice bag does not leak onto the dressing. Ice packs can be applied generously for the first 48 hours and as needed afterward.
-
Activity Restrictions: Follow specific activity restrictions as advised. It’s easier to prevent pain than to manage it after it develops. Rest for a few days and keep the operated extremity elevated above heart level to reduce swelling.
-
Wound Care: Keep the dressing clean and dry to promote healing.
-
Physical Therapy: Begin physical therapy a day or two after surgery. In the first week, focus on regaining joint motion. Strengthening exercises will be introduced later. Regular exercises are essential for recovery.
-
Diet and Hydration: Eat a healthy diet and drink plenty of non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated fluids.
-
Follow-up Appointment: Schedule and attend your follow-up appointment as advised.
